 SHANTI THE DON

So here's the thing. I hate Priyanka Karky. Or to be more accurate, I should hate Priyanka Karky. She's 25 and dazzling. She's dropped oodles of weight and doesn't even have the courtesy to look like she knows what a calorie is. She's got a career that's on a fast train to everywhere. And, oh yes, she has a smile that an infatuated brother of mine swears is better than Jessica Alba's served with a side of ice cream. All very good reasons for me to hate Priyanka Karky. But it's hard for me to hold on to the resentment because I'm with her almost everyday and because I love her more than I hate her.

And and and, did I mention that she's charming, a great dancer (knows ballet, flamingo, salsa, tap dance, kathak and is learning hip-hop and b-boying), has a point of view and reads books, mind you, not Danielle Steele. Her list of favourite writers is impressive – Chekhov, Kundera, and Ibsen.

She makes you feel that she and life are going to go on forever. For her, quality matters over quantity when it comes to work. While most newcomers go on a signing spree after their debut to cement a place in Kollywood, she prefers taking the route less travelled.  "I only want to be part of those movies which will help me be remembered eternally as an actor. I'm not into the number game. It doesn't matter to me who is number one or number two," she says.

She loves acting, it's her passion. A well-known director once said, "Priyanka is born to shine. She is a born superstar." Priyanka is two films old now, with Mero Best Friend releasing in September and 3 Lovers due in September.

"I want to do everything, but I also don't want to give up my life while doing it. I want to travel. Or take a month of and laze around on my couch and chill with friends. I want to meet new people. I want to read books. I cannot just make movies my whole life,  because besides films I have a life." Still, a month long holiday could soon become a fond and faraway wish, I tell her all the time. Nevertheless, she's just signed two more movies, Vigilante and Dhuwaan.

She never fails to inspire me. I happened to ask her once, "What's your biggest wish Prinku?" Without thinking and with a hint of innocence, she replied, "I want to be remembered." The answer was simple but left a great impression on me. Thanks to her, I am a great learner now.

As she gears up to take on the world, one yellow-ballet-slipper-shod-step at a time, there's one question I always wanted to ask her: As the whirlwind gathers, does she worry that someday she may forget to stop and smell the roses? I think I know the answer. "As if."
