SAMEER TULADHAR
Shyam Samsong Rai is shy and gentle and this is clearly evident in the music he creates. His tunes are soulful and melodic and he sticks to themes of love- lost and found, betrayal, loyalty and friendship. His songs are easy going and very pleasant. He is a rising star in the Nepali music industry so WAVE sat down with him to ask him a few questions about his art.

Introduce yourself
Shyam Samsong Rai, born 26th September, 1980.  I'm from Bhojpur, Timma VDC

After completing my high school in Bhojpur, I did my intermediate and Bachelor in Kathmandu. Later, I graduated in classical music from Bhatkhande Music University, Lucknow, India (under a scholarship provided by ICCR, India)

I entered the Nepali music industry through my first album named 'Murchunga' back in 2007 A.D. Later, in 2010, I took out another album called 'Paruhangnin Sumnima'. Other than that, I have worked on some collection albums as well.

What got you motivated to sing?
To be honest, I have been really interested in singing since my childhood. My father used to sing when I was young which really got me inspired to sing. I had a good voice so all my family members encouraged and supported me to sing.

Have you got an album?
Apart from my previous albums, I just released a new one titled, 'Saima'

What's your best song out of your album?
All the songs of this album are my favourite.

If you could collaborate with any artists, living or dead, who would it be?
Shreya Ghoshal of India because I like her singing style and her the quality of her voice

What are you doing, as a singer, to build an image and to secure a spot in the Nepali music industry?
As you know, it's very hard to sustain yourself in the Nepali music industry as there's a fierce competition.
I have gained experience, knowledge and ideas after more than a decade in this field but I am still in the learning phase. With all these, I have managed to present the kind of songs that are demanded by the listener.

Besides being a singer, what are your plans for the future?
Being a singer, music is my first priority. So focusing on music, I am going to open an institute and help those who are interested in singing and carving a career in music.

Do you think singing is a financially viable option for young people in Nepal?
The truth is, it is very hard to survive in this industry. However, a few singers are doing well in terms of finances. So, yes it is financially viable for really talented and capable and for those who have a real passion for music if they want to pursue their careers in the Nepali music industry.
