Kwan Chhang, 28, better known in Dharan as WeDharane, is quite a character. With his signature style which consists of a T-shirt, a pair of shorts, slippers and a backpack which never leaves his sight, it's not difficult to spot him. Kwan Chhang reminisces about the days when people teased, taunted and even threw pebbles at him to chase him away, but now, people throw themselves at him, asking to be photographed. We Dharane, created by Gagan Nepali from UAE, is a Facebook page where Dharanes around the world can check up on every day happenings in Dharan. It was only after Kwan Chhang returned home after his 3 years stint as a chef in Afghanistan, that he was appointed as the site's administrator. "I have to give credit to Hi5," Kwan Chhang says. "Taking pictures with a mobile phone and uploading them ignited my passion for photography. I do have a DSLR now because my job requires it but when I first started as a Dharane Admin, I had to borrow a digital camera. Attending events used to be a hassle because no one would believe a 'photographer' with a tiny point and shoot." His new position not only meant taking pictures of events but also conversing with people. That's when Kwan Chhang realised Dharan youths wanted to be involved in social activies but just didn't know how so he decided to act as a mediator. With so much enthusiasm pouring in, We Dharane has successfully managed to lead Dharan Run, blood donations, cycle rallies and even Buddha Subba cleaning campaign. "Since I lived abroad as a youngster, I never felt Dharan was home and even tried to leave many times as a teenager. But now, I have finally come to terms that this little town means a lot to me. I would do anything, within my power, to make Dharan a beautiful and charitable place." When asked about his future plans, Kwan Chhang has no clue but he definitely sees himself contributing to society, to Dharan, its youth and Nepal. "Being a Dharane admin does not pay and oh yes, I would like to upgrade my camera to Canon EOS Mark 5D Mark, with priorities on lens. Wide lens. Prime lens and zoom lens. Anything but the kit lens." WAVE sincerely hopes Kwan Chhang can soon tick off a camera and lens from his wish list. All the best! Rapid Fire Questions | ||||||||||||||||||||
