Winner of June Quiz:
June's answer to the Mapmarks quiz was Beni-Jomsom highway where it passes in a narrow part of the road near Tatopani. The Kali Gandaki River cuts a deep valley between Annapurna and Dhaulagiri here. This cut is regarded by geologists as the deepest scar on the surface of the earth. The river flows at 1,400m above sea level between two 8,000m Himalayan peaks that are separated by barely 20 km. This highway has shortened the travel time between Pokhara to Jomsom from ten days to eight hours, and once the road is blacktopped it will be even shorter. Opinion is divided about whether this is a good or bad thing. Some locals are happy that there will be more Indian pilgrims going to Muktinath and basic necessities will be cheaper and it will be easier to get the sick to hospital. But the trekking companies are worried that one of the world's most scenic hiking routes has now been made less interesting. | ||||||||||||||||||||
