POLITICALLY CORRECT
Heading Nowhere
by SHRABYA TIMSINA
KONG YEN LIN | The three players of this dirty little game retain their differences and disagreements, and with the death of GPK, all expectations of consensus have diminished. 28 May is knocking at our doors, and yet the constitution fails to be the central focus of Nepali politics. The struggle for power persists as UML still leads the government. Even though they claim they're ready to give in, in the case that they are replaced by 'responsible' leadership, they still don't bother to find ways to join hands with the opposition, which basically means they still want the Maoists out of the way. On the other side of the coin, the Maoists are evidently on the verge of a serious comeback. They plan to push their own government through mass mobilisation in the name of Shashakta Andolan. The word on the street is that our former guerrilla friends have already summoned people inside the valley from nearby districts. Well, it's not only them; the other ruling parties have got their backbones in the existing security mechanism. The army and police force that was meant to protect the people from violence and crime has its men washing dishes and sweeping floors in the houses of politicians. The situation anyhow leads us all back to square one, which is simply NOWHERE. To add to all this disorder, all of our private educational institutions were forced to close down, for several days. Fine, education should be equitable and accessible to all citizens but that does not mean that the Maoists can simply lock down schools and violate the people's right to education. We already have uneducated people in this pitiful nations of ours, we do NOT want more. If our politics were correct then a conducive educational framework would have been set up, but it's all a distant dream now. We're all on a ship currently, and if our nation does not see political consensus, if the CA members don't work 18 hours a day drafting the constitution, if our parties don't untangle themselves from their internal conflicts, if they don't stop giving in to international pressure and if they don't start listening to what we people are screaming for, then our ship's going to sink, and we will drown in our own mistakes and imprudence.
