The You Tube Stars

We may not have the dramatic gopher or the sneezing panda to our credit but Nepali videos on the tube are just as interesting (and silly). YouTube has made these three kids celebrities in the Nepali blogosphere.

Lex Limbu (lexlimbu)

Besides following Jharana Bajracharya everywhere and updating us on her whereabouts, Lex has used the portal to discuss issues that concern the Nepali people. One of his most controversial videos, which has received hordes of comments from both Indians and Nepalis, is the one on Chandni Chowk to China. A close second is a video on the Namrata Shrestha-DJ Tantrik issue, which got over 50,000 hits. "I just thought people needed a different perspective on this incident, a less negative one. Some agreed some didn't but I needed to get it out there," says Lex. His charm lies in the way he stands behind the camera mixing his laid-back swagger with fiery arguments.

Of negative feedback, he says, "People find it easier to attack the person than the argument so most negative feedback is just name-calling which is stupid and therefore easy to ignore."

Natasha Shah (natashah83)

Natasha Shah, preferably called Nattu, made a leap into YouTube when she realised her self-composed song Nattu's song was a hit Bluetooth transfer and wanted to claim it. Since then, the vivacious and rather goofy Natasha has been all over YouTube strapped in her guitar, belting out self-compositions and covers of her favourite songs. "I wanted to show who I was and what I could deliver as a person, especially from a country that is almost unheard of," says Nattu, who lives in the UK. In her own words, the positive feedback she has amassed is like getting an 'A' in math.

With time, inevitably, she admits she has attracted some haters. "Sometimes it makes me laugh that people waste time actually creating an account on YouTube to diss me, especially when I can delete them in like two seconds," she says. She adds that she's used to retorting with witty comments (but not swearing) which only winds them up further, but it's all part of the game. And what makes her win is her likeable personality and followers who actually wait for her to make new posts. She says she even finds it spooky that there is a chain of comments within seconds after putting up a new video.

Natasha fears coming out of that little box on YouTube, but can't help fantasising what it would feel like to make it in the real world. Though content with her initial taste of fame, her dreams of success stretch all the way to Hollywood.

Laxcha Bantawa (NepUNITY)

Laxcha Bantawa's group started out making spoofs of Korean movies and then went on to make short film-strips of their own, written and directed by themselves. Now, their focus is mainly on 'promoting' people, where they lobby for young Nepalis with talent.
