After much ado, the restoration of Swayambhunath temple has been scheduled for completion on March 2010. The focus has been to repair, clean and gild the copper-plated sections of the stupa, which include the nine shrines around the Stupa's base, the 76-foot tall spire and harmika, and the large vajra and Dharmadatu mandala situated in front of the Stupa on its eastern side. This restoration of the temple is said to be the first in over 90 years and the 15th major one in over 900 years. The restoration was sponsored by TNMC, an American organisation with a long history of cultural preservation work around the globe.
