Gosainkunda is one of the holy lakes that dot the Himalaya. Most of these tarns are regarded to be holy by Hindus and Buddhists alike, and are sites of pilgrimage. Thousands throng to Gosainkunda itself on Janai Purnima in July, and the arrival of the road to Dhunche has made it possible to get to the lake from Kathmandu in two days for a holy dip. Gosainkunda is not the biggest Himalayan lake in Nepal (Rara, Phoksundo and Phewa are bigger) but it certainly gets the most visitors. Avid trekkers may want to go up via Dhunche and return to Kathmandu via Helambu in what is called the 'Gosainkunda Circuit'.
