November's Map Marks (above) was a difficult one because it was from an angle that few people see it through. Still, some of you got it right. Congratulations. It was an aerial shot of Imja Tso, the lake at the base of Lhotse in the Khumbu with Ama Dablam in the background. The photo was taken from a plane flying at 6,000m just below the south face of Lhotse Shar looking west. Imja Tso has been in the headlines because it is a lake formed by global warming due to climate change. Trekking maps from 40 years ago show no lake here, now there is a lake 2km long, 1km wide and nearly 100m deep. If it bursts, settlements downstream will be washed away in a tsunami of water, mud and boulders. World leaders are gathering in Copenhagen in December to agree on ways to slow global warming.
