COVER STORY
Food Hunt
'If there is anything we are serious about, it is neither religion nor learning, but food', Lin Yutang once said about the Chinese. It is likewise with Kathmanduites. And though we don't have loony stories that link to the origins of our cuisine like the French and Italian, our foodstuff is just as interesting, and our love for it just as profound. When we say food here, for once, we don't mean the stuff you get in the gaudy, rather pricey eateries that have mushroomed in the city. We're subscribing to the humble thelas, bhattis and chiyapasals around the city. Apart from being much less expensive than the bistros, they actually do a lot more to tickle your taste buds. On your next day off, go discover for yourself how delectable local food really is. Either ask for directions or make do with the map we've scribbled for you. Index: 1) Jyatha: Bara Kathmandu on a Budget Total Budget: Rs 200 9.00-9.45: Leave your house and take a public bus to [R]NAC. 9.45-10.30: Make your way to Basantapur Durbar Square for a nice cup of tea and doughnut. 10.30-11.00: While you bask in the morning sun, check out the headlines, its always good to know what's going on. 11.00-11.40: You cant afford to climb up Dharahara, but you can admire it from the outside. As you do, give your buddies a missed call and find out what they're up to. 11.40-12.30: Its time for your afternoon nap. Buy a mana of chana and badam, and make your way to Tudhikel. It's the best place to have a lie-down. 12.30-1.30: Time for some sight seeing. Take a microbus to Jawalakhel, the hippos and rhinos at the zoo need a visit. Remember, a student ID will get you in at half price. 1.30-2.30: Lunch hour. The choyala and alu in Magal Bajar are meant to be the best. Take this opportunity to try your hand at photography; Patan Durbar Square is the perfect place. 2.30- 3.30: Too much alone. Call up a few friends and plan a window-shopping-spree in Newroad. 3.30-4.30: Those sausages on the thelas are tempting. Try some. By the way, the burgers and chats are just as good. 4.30-5.30: Hang on, don't thing about leaving yet; Basantapur's night market are only starting. 5.30: It gets dark rather early these, time to head home eh? After you come up to JWLK to visit zoo you should not forget to go and have lunch in 'Baje ko pasal' behind NTC tower, you get everything from aloo tama to sizzler. But if you are on diet then you can order hot baked breads, do-nuts and many more which is just next to it. And if you get bored then why not try Play Station 1 or 2 next to it in communication shop. AM sure you will enjoy it !! Posted on:
