KUNDA DIXIT

This picture shows why the Kali Gandaki is called 'kali'-due to the dark-coloured sediments it washes down from Mustang.  This photograph was taken in July in Baglung when the river should have been flowing full force, but because of this year's delayed monsoon it was below normal. Thirty km downstream in Palpa is the Kali Gandaki hydroelectric project. It uses the water from the river to generate 140MW of electricity by passing it through a 8km tunnel at the point where the river bends sharply eastwards to flow for 120km until it joins the Trisuli near Narayangadh. The Kali Gandaki has cut the deepest gorge in the world between Dhaulagiri and Annapurna, and according to geologists this is proof that the river is older than the mountains.
