 MANOJ SHRESTHA
The answers for May's Where in Nepal is this? quiz was the Kosi ferry at Chhatara. This the point where the Kosi river breaks through the mountains into its alluvial fan in Nepal's eastern Tarai. Chhatara is just downstream from Bara Kshetra, the site of the proposed Kosi high dam, which if built would be Nepal's biggest lake that would stretch all the way to Ramechhap in the east and Tumlingtar in the north. The Kosi basin extends from Sindhupalchok to Sankhuwasabha, and even Tibet. When the Kosi breached its embankment last August, displacing around 60,000 people in Nepal and nearly 5 million in Bihar, it also washed away a 2 km section of the East-West Highway. Until the river was channelled back to its original path, vehicles had to cross the Kosi at this ferry in Chhatara.
