I am what I am
I have many passions in life, one of which is eating. I am happiest around food. When I sit down for lunch with friends, the conversation is usually about what to eat for dinner. The sweet smell of chocolates brings a twinkle to my eyes and the aroma of melting butter on a piece of toast comforts me. Born into a Newar family my passion for food has always been appreciated, even though my skills in the kitchen haven't kept pace. But the downside of being an epicurean is that relatives are always commenting on my weight. I don't remember ever being thin and 'kasto motako' or 'eh ahile ta ali dublai chha' is the normal way I am greeted at parties and family gatherings. Does it affect me? I'd love to say no, but the reality is that it does. I could go and on about my vain attempts at losing weight, one of which was sticking to a liquid diet for 15 days. I lost three kilos but I felt terrible. Constant food cravings made me snap at everybody or made me extremely sad, both of which aren't my traits. These days shopping for clothes, shoes, bangles and even helmets reminds me of how big I am for a Nepali. It frustrates me at times but I've come to terms with my size. But I am okay with the way I look because I know I am healthy and happy. I have friends and family that accept me for who I am and that's what matters to me the most. The matter of weight does come up occasionally but it isn't the centre of my universe anymore. Our obsession with weight shouldn't take precedence over how we feel about ourselves. Thin, fat, short, tall, big, small are just words invented to describe things and not people. What matters the most is being who you are. C2
