Palung Valley
February Map Marks picture is of the scenic Palung Valley as seen from Sim Bhanjyang on the Tribhuban Highway. Palung lies on the old road that links Kathmandu to Hetauda. It doesn't have much traffic but it should be declared a "scenic highway" for its views and promoted as a tourism destination on its own right. The Tribhuban Highway is ideal for mountain bike tours, drives and hikes. The dense forests of pine and rhododendron on Simbhanjyang give the whole area an alpine feeling, and there is a sweeping vista from Dhaulagiri to Makalu from the road. Simbhanjyang is especially popular in winter after snow when hundreds of young people from Hetauda and Kathmandu flock to the high pass to play with snow balls. Unfortunately, this year there was no snow because of the winter drought.
