SimikotThe name of the capital of Humla district comes from sim (for swamp) and kot (fort). The plateau overlooking the Karnali is a swampy area, most of it built over by the airfield. Its remoteness in the north-western corner of Nepal makes Humla the country's most inaccessible district. There are no roads, and the only way to get there is by walking for nearly two weeks from Kalikot, or by plane from Surkhet or Nepalganj. But Simkot has emerged as a gateway for tourists and pilgrims visiting Mansarovar. A 36km road from the Chinese border town of Hilsa to Simkot was started 10 years ago but came to a halt because of the conflict. Simkot now has its own FM radio station and most houses have solar lighting.
