Kulekhani ReservoirFirst thought of by Swiss geologist Toni Hagen in 1956, the Kulekhani dam was finally built in 1982. It is the only reservoir type hydro-electric project in Nepal. Located just 15 km southwest of Kathmandu Valley, the reservoir stores monsoon water to generate 80 megawatts of peak power in two cascades. A third plant to use the same water, Kulekhani 3, is presently under construction. The present load-shedding has been aggravated by the reservoir being almost empty due to the winter drought.
