Himalayan Mountaineering Institute [HMI] was founded in Darjeeling on 4 Nov. 1954. It was Late Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru himself who initiated its establishment after Late Tenzing Norgay Sherpa and Sir Edmund Hillary's ascent of Mount Everest on 29 May 1953. Currently HMI has three wings: theTraining Wing, the Museum and the Administrative Wing. In this month's Darj & NE section, we feature photos of HMI during its foundation and from some of its earliest training sessions. Late Dwarika Das Shrestha, who too was an active member of HMI in the late 1950s, took all the featured photos.
