This fabulous photograph of Kathmandu Valley was taken by Rajesh KC from Kot Danda on the eastern rim of the Valley last November during one of those weeks in the autumn season when the Himalaya was spectacular.

Looming over the north-western horizon is the Gorkha Himal massif shaped like a 'trisul'. Himalchuli (7893m) is the centre peak, to the left is Boudha Himal and to the right Manaslu (8163m). These mountains are 90 km on a straight line from Kathmandu.

Manaslu is known as a 'Japanese' mountain because it was on the third attempt that a Japanese expedition climbed it in 1955 via the northeast face. Himalchuli was also climbed for the first time from the west ridge by a Japanese expedition in 1960.

Far off on the horizon to the left, the Annapurnas are also visible. The dark hill below Manaslu is Nagarjun and beneath it is Swayambu. The bright light in the sky above the Valley is a plane coming in to land at Kathmandu airport. For more pictures by Rajesh KC see: www.phalano.com
