Most of us are quick to use sunscreen lotions for the face and body before we step into the sun. But did you know that your skin isn't the only part of your body that needs protection from harsh UV rays? Every time you step outside into daylight, even in the winter, your hair is at great risk from harmful sun damage.

But why is the sun so harmful to hair?
The UV rays from the sun break down the keratin and melanin in the cuticle and cortex of the hair. As a result, your hair is gradually weakened and becomes drier. The effect shows up as light streaks in the hair which is called sun bleaching. Due to the rays from the sun, hair will lack moisture and suppleness, especially on the ends, where it will be more prone to tangle when washing. In extreme cases your hair can have a straw-like texture that refuses to shine.

So, does this mean you have to cover up your hair every time you go out? No and neither do you have to wear a hat or cover your hair with a scarf everywhere you go. All you need to do is be conscious of the sun's rays and use correct measures to protect your hair.

What precautions can we take?
There are hundreds of shampoos out there; you need to make sure that your shampoo has UV shield protection from the sun. By using UV protectors regularly you will build up a protective barrier against the sun, which in the course of time retains your hair's natural texture and builds greater protection.

Keep in mind that unprotected hair, like skin, will burn from sun exposure.

The long-term effects of sun damage can be quite difficult to reverse, especially if not treated correctly and frequently. Dry, brittle lusterless hair not only looks unattractive but also is difficult to style.

So, the next time you buy your sunblock lotion, don't forget to pick up a shampoo with UV protectors as well. Your crowning glory needs to be shielded too. If you really love your hair, prove it by protecting it from the harmful sun. And, greet the shining sun with a smile.

Try this test: take a single hair and curl it with your fingernail as if you are curling a ribbon. Drop the curled hair into a glass of water; it should almost immediately regain its original form. If it does not do so very quickly then your hair is damaged and will need to be deep conditioned.
