July Himal: Dorje Lakpa

Dorje Lakpa is an elegant pyramid as seen from Kathmandu Valley, and is the highest mountain (6,990m) situated so close to the capital (only 40km). Getting there takes slightly longer and the preferred climbing route is up the Balephi Khola in Sindhupalchok District.

It is only when one goes east into Dolakha that you notice Dorje Lakpa is the westernmost peak in a jumble of mountains that includes the Big White Peak and Naya Kanga and is collectively known as Jugal Himal. The range is situated east of Langtang and west of Phurbi Chyachu.

Dorje Lakpa was explored by an all-women Scottish expedition in the 1950s and first climbed in 1958 by Dick Isherwood. Although its southwest face is regarded as a highly technical rock climb, there are easier routes to the top from the East Ridge and the northeast face.

The region below Jugal Himal in Helambu and Panch Pokhari is one of the most interesting trekking areas in Nepal, and is completely un-touristy and the local hospitality gives a feel of what Nepal used to be like before the trekking industry.
