Dharan-9 came alive on the evening of 21 April with the first ever Dharan Free Street Concert. Sponsored by Tuborg, the Himalayan Bank and ex-British Army Hem Limbu, the event was organised by the Sagarmatha Youth Club and managed by the Power Health Club. Amid various performances by local bands like The Cave, Dibya Dristi, Tapaswi and The Soul, dance troupes from Dharan's numerous dance academies spun and gyrated in the mellow evening gloom. Solo performances didn't sit too well with the crowd who booed the track singers and ushered in more bands. The Cave, fronted by a female vocalist, did mediocre covers of Cobweb songs and an excruciating version of Metallica's cover of So What. Dibya Dristi was a sound band, with a strong front-man and an adequate band. They covered songs by the Axe, Robin N the New Revolution, Bad Company and Dire Straits, but were better with the Nepali numbers than the English ones. Although a fight did break out once, nothing untoward marred the event. Dharan came out in all its glory: guys with green hair bobbed up and down next to girls in barely-there shorts and skirts. The heat didn't seem to bother anyone much and the performances went well with the crowd who flocked the streets well.
