The SLC exams are over but not many people are planning to take a break. According to a few private instituitions, the number of students signing up for bridge courses has grown in recent years. However, unlike a time filler for someone who is bored or can simply afford it, these courses are for people who can't wait to go on to the next stage of their lives, who think that time should only be spent pursuing their goals and that taking a break is a show of weakness. All right, maybe we exagerated a bit. But it is certainly intensive, pressurising, result oriented and would only be helpful for goal setters who are spurred to work even harder in a competitve environment. If you fit the description above, congratulations! WAVE has prepared a guide to keep you on track. But if you think the journey is more important than the destination, you may want to think of other ways to spend your time.

SLC

4 Main Bridge
Courses

• Management such as accountancy and economics
• Advance science is challenging but also the most popular amongst all
• Entrance preparation for those who are not too sure which subject area to go into. Some institutes such as Cambridge offers college specific preparation course
•'A' levels includes both humanities and sciences
subjects

Teachers

Many institutes claims to recuit only from the best colleges. Who knows? Some might turn out to be your teacher for the next 2 years! But don't expect a short cut to your dream colleges.

Student Teacher Proportion

About 30-40 students to a teacher. Serious attention seekers, sorry but home tuition will probably suit you better.

Teaching Materials

Compilation of notes and questions set by experienced teachers based on past year question trends. Some institutes offer beyond all that. Alfa Beta has a reference library of textbooks and previous year papers while Intel gives out interactive softwares to cater to students who dislike reading.

Tests!!!

Prepare to be grilled as most institutes have rigorous examinations.

Money matters

Science courses are generally more expensive, ranging from Rs 6000-9000, while entrance preparation costs are Rs 4000-6000, depending on the instituition. Make sure you check out the paying schemes available. Some allow instalments or even discounts for students with financial difficulties.
