IN ON THE ACT
For the Children of Tomorrow by SHIVANI SINGH THARU
It's going to be some world you will inhabit: filled with complex knots and ties and awe-inspiring mysteries and magic. With the mysteries of the universe almost resolved by science, the magic of the world is simplified by religion and philosophy. The knots and ties remain as they are because they depend on human nature, which in itself depends on other variables. The paradox remains that the simplest thing raises the most complex of questions. And the simplest things are none other than us – humans. So your birth will add another complex block to this already mystifying conundrum. Yes, you will be a citizen of this world but the world itself is vague and ambiguous. It is true that god made this world but humans have made boundaries. Therefore, you will belong to a certain boundary and your freedom will be limited to a border. So specifically speaking you will be the children of Nepal. Nepal can be introduced historically, geographically, socio-culturally, in as many facets as a country could possibly be defined. Since, you won't be a tourist to this country, the height of Mount Everest, the legacy of Lord Buddha and the treasure of cultural heritage will be of little importance. Being a native you will soon realize that these are the most mundane information with which an average Nepali takes aid to resolve an identity crisis. But keep in mind that you have the right to know the present, as the past is bygone and future is yet to come. Life at present is very hard and the future looks very bleak. We currently live in a semi-truth reality. Yes, the situation is absurd and surreal. Because, we have bulbs for light but no electricity to power them. We have vehicles to ride in but no fuel to make them go. We have stoves to cook our food on, but no gas to light them. We have big plans and operations but we don't have an implementation process. We have politicians but no leaders. We have a country but no patriots. We have everything we could want but they don't belong to us. Now isn't that an incoherent reality? These days they say everything will be settled after the Constitution Assembly elections, which will be the guideline and rule book of our country; an end to all the injustice. So this coming month I am eager to take part in the election. Not for us, our generation is already lost. We will vote for you, for your future. So that you can go to school safely and return in one piece, so that you don't have to seek employment in Gulf countries, so that you don't have to idealize America. The only fear is the uncertainty of the election. It has already been postponed twice and if it happens again then we'll put your names on the voters list too. Call me hopelessly optimistic but what other choice do I have? Whatever will be, will be! | ||||||||||||||||||||
