Roman Holiday is, in simple words, a great movie. Released in 1953, it was in this critically acclaimed movie that Audrey Hepburn made her breakthrough performace. She remains an icon in the movie industry. Her male counterpart, Gregory Peck and director William Wyler are also two of the best on the silver screen.
The movie's story is fairly simple; a 20th century princess, played by Hepburn, gets fed up with her stately life and decides to run away during her European tour's layover in Rome. First night out, she ends up meeting an American journalist, played by Peck, who helps her. The two, like you would expect, fall in love. The juxtaposition of the world of a princess and that of a commoner makes one think about trust relationships, responsibilities and taking chances.
Roman Holiday is perhaps one of the biggest movies to have ever come out of Hollywood. The Oscar Winner Amelie (French) is just an example. Amelie herself was designed to look like Hepburn and the rejuvenating scooter ride she takes around Paris with her new found love is one that was immortalized in Rome by Peck and Hepburn 50 years ago. The fairy tale love stories about modern day Prince and Princesses, such as The Prince and I, also surely come from the Roman Holiday family tree. Roman Holiday also earned 10 Academy Award Nominations, including Best Actres, Best Director (William Wyler) and Best Screenplay. The movie was also shot entirely in Rome.
Roman Holiday is in black and white, but don't let stop you from treating yourself to a good movie featuring some of the finest ever from Hollywood. If you've enjoyed watching anything from The Princess Diaries to The Prince And I, you will definitely want to watch Roman Holiday.
