Nepal Star by SUBEL BHANDARI
Probably the biggest talent hunt and the first ever reality based television show in Nepal began January 03 from Biratnagar. The much anticipated Nepal Star has it all. Hope, heartbreak and jubilation, such a television show has never been on our screens so far. Nepal 1, the television station based in Delhi, started broadcasting the Nepal Star from Friday, Jan 28. Popular singers and musicians Jems Pradhan, Nima Rumba and Sukmit Gurung make up the judging panel. The first audition started at Hotel Xenial, Biratnagar. With a turnout of over 1,000 young enthusiasts, the Biratnagar leg of Nepal Star saw some of the most talented singers in the whole competition. The next stop was Pokhara. Even though the turnout was comparatively lower than Biratnagar, the show was equally good and four judges from the Pokhara music industry were present for the preliminary round. The show was also graced with the company of Pokhara's famous folk singer and writer Ali Miya, who shared his experience with the judges and participants. In this issue of WAVE, we photo-feature the Pokhara and Kathmandu episodes of Nepal Star taken exclusively by WAVE. The final stop at Kathmandu's Hotel Blue Star was overwhelming because of the sheer number of hopeful applicants. More than 4,000 people turned out for the audition. After the preliminary round, 48 participants were groomed from three places to be the Nepal Star. Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt was also present in one of the episodes and announced that the winner would get a chance to sing in one of his movies. For the rest of the series, watch Nepal Star every Friday 7:30 to 8:30 PM and Sunday 7:30 to 8:00 PM on Nepal 1. Besides a music contract and a chance to sing in a Bollywood movie, other attractive prizes include a Sinski motorcycle, Philips 29" colour TV with DVD and a mini hi-fi home theatre, the show is sure to be the next big thing on the small screen. WAVE is the official media for Nepal Star.
