16 – 29 January:
Australian Open, Melbourne, Australia. Roger Federer and Amelie Mauresmo win the Singles title.

19 February: Pakistan U-19 clinch the 2006 Under-19 World Cup after beating India in the final.

29 April: Chelsea win their second English Premiership League title in a row.

30 April: Reports of the largest match fixing scandal in the history of the Italian Serie A football league appear in the media. Three of the top level clubs are relegated to C division.

14 May: FC Juventus clinch the 29th Italian title.

18 May: FC Barcelona beat Arsenal in the final of the UEFA Champions League played in Paris.

29 May: Dinesh Raj Rai, 24, wins the 3rd Tenzing Hillary Everest Marathon, clocking the 42.2km race at 3.28.27.

9 June: The 2006 FIFA World Cup begins in Germany.20 June: Miami Heat win the NBA Finals 4-2. Dwyane Wade is named Most Valuable Player.

9 July: Italy wins the 2006 FIFA World Cup beating France 5-3 in penalties. The score after extra time is 1-1.

23 July: American Floyd Landis wins the Tour de France, but later fails a doping test.

18-28 August: The South Asian Games take place. Nepal wins seven Gold medals. Athlete Rajendra Bhandari clinches two golds, but then fails a doping test. Other gold winners include; Deepak Bista and Manita Shahi in taekwondo, Sulochana Sinjako and Kushal Shrestha in karate, Bina Lama and Rajkumar Rasaili in wushu, and Kamal Bahadur Adhikari in weight lifting.

3 September: Andre Agassi retires at the end of the US Open.

10 September: Seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher announces his  retirement from Formula 1 motor racing.

1-15 December: The 15th Asian Games start in Qatar. Nepali athletes Deepak Bista, Manita Shahi, and Ayasha Shakya win bronze medals in Taekwondo.

21 December: Australian cricketer Shane Warne announces his retirement from the sport.

29 December: Australia sweeps the Ashes. They win 5-0 against England to take the Series.
