Ketan Mehta
Starring: Aamir Khan, Toby Stephens, Rani Mukherjee, Amisha Patel

Wounds heal but scars remain. It is no wonder then that the most expensive Bollywood film (estimated IRs 3,200,000) is based on the colonial history of India.

Mangal Pandey–The Rising adapts fictionalised accounts of the protagonist of India's first struggle against the British. Known as the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, circumstances led Mangal Pandey (Aamir Khan), then a loyal Indian soldier in the British Company forces, to sacrifice his life so that the seeds of revolt would sprout among rural Indians.

A saga of heroism, The Rising, is a commercial success and has managed to win critical acclaim worldwide. Also, the film skilfully portrays subjugation of women. Rani Mukherjee (Heera) and Amisha Patel (Jwala) are vital to the motivation of the plot. With great shots and music, the movie borrows some elements from Braveheart. AT

Rock 'n roll

Directed by: Richard Linklater
Starring: Jack Black

Feeling blue and down in the dumps? Grab The School of Rock and plonk yourself into your favourite sofa because this movie, though a bit old is not outdated. Jack Black as Dewey Finn with his funky getup and wannabe rock star attitude knows how to get the gig rolling.

Finn wasn't looking for a job, he wanted to become a rock star. But a man's got to do what a man's got to do when his band fires him. It was only his best friend's girlfriend's goading that made him find a job as a substitute teacher anyway. You can't blame him for bestowing recesses to his students at that uptight prep school.

Surprise, surprise! Then he hears them play music and the next thing you know, he's whipped up a rock band with these children, who have loads of attitude. When they strike up the band, you can't help but cheer them on. Definitely, a movie to put on your list of fun flicks that leave you with a happy hangover.
