I have completed my plus-two and am waiting for my results. I plan to go abroad for further studies, but I am really confused about what to study. I am really interested in social work and dream about one day working in the UN. Would sociology or arts be better? I am good at writing too. I don't want to do business management. My friends say I should study arts and English, but I really don't know.
- UN hopeful

Dear UN hopeful,No subject is good or bad in itself, it is your interest which makes it so. Your eventual dream of pursuing work at the UN suggests that you have a deeper interest in sociology. If you give your best, you can excel in anything.

I passed the SLC this year and came abroad for further studies. My parents and elders insist I study Business Management, but I want to take up mathematics because I am very fond of it. Should I obey my elders or stand up for myself?
- Confused

Dear Confused,You should choose the subject you like best. Think of it--it's your career and if you choose a subject that you do not like, you may end up not doing well in your career. Yes, you should listen to advice and suggestions from your seniors and parents but, at the end of the day, only you know what your heart and mind say, and you should decide accordingly.

I am studying engineering and am in my first year. I want to go to the USA, but don't know how long to wait. Our Bachelor's board, Tribhuwan University, doesn't gives us grades, and I don't know what to do about transcripts for the application process etc. Please tell me there's hope for my future.
- Abhinay

Dear Abhinay,The choice is yours, whether you want to go to the US or continue your studies here in Nepal. Please get it clear, though, that not everyone who studies in US succeeds. Regarding your grades, you can have your grades evaluated by evaluation bodies in the US. Once this is done, you can apply to any US university. About your future, no matter where you are, if you study hard and give 100%, you will succeed. Remember the proverb, "He who endures, conquers."
