LETTER OF THE MONTH

In response to the Young Ideas discussion published in WAVE (issue 125), the participants easily say "Once we grow up things will be better". But is it that simple? What I fail to understand is, on what grounds will guys like Rabi, Rijendra, Vijay, Anurag, Sujan, Manjaree and Bhuvan lead the nation tomorrow. They will have to rethink. Problems like corruption and the Maoist insurgency aren't easy to solve. They exist in Nepal because of two main reasons: Nepotism and procrastination. These are things that are woven in our culture. It is not enough for a bunch of young college students to think that tomorrow will be better. It requires change in each of us because just solving the problems today does not guarantee that it will not be repeated in the future. The situation must not be underestimated. Corruption has occurred because of our politicians' incompetence and inability to lead. Instead of working for the nation, they engaged in intra- and inter- party conflict for personal gain. Only a few young people seem to have a promising future in politics and it won't be easy for them. The Maoists aren't just another political party but a group of people with different intentions. The top level might want to join the political mainstream but what about the rest? There is no guarantee that Prachanda or Baburam will join mainstream politics. There are young boys and girls filled with rage. As we grow up, they too will grow and these young people might start their own revolution five or ten years from now. What I'm saying is that it isn't impossible to improve but we should understand the present to anticipate the future. We need to be prepared because it is us that the nation's future rests on.

I find Useless Gyan very useful and suggest that you expand the column and on your website. Can you feature international bands with native ones? Can we have Green Day on poster?

Samip Dhungel

I've been reading WAVE for three years and would like to congratulate the team. However, I don't like the paper. How can you charge Rs 35 for paper like that? About books, can you promote Nepali books like Palpasa Cafe, The Royal Ghost and Soch.

Cocaine,
Anamnagar

Dear Cocaine: About the paper, we hope to have better quality soon. The books discussed in the magazine are selected by the WAVE Book Club members and books by Nepali writers in both English and Nepali are on the Club's calendar. So keep reading or join the club!

I'm WAVE crazy. Why did you put Kranti Ale and Noyo Sing on June's cover? They don't even know how to play football. You should have put Nepali footballers or even the Nepali national football team. It is your responsibility to promote the sport.

Shanjog Chamling

Dear Shanjog: We put Kranti and Noyo on June's cover as a run up to the WAVE Kick Off Cup which took place on 24 June. They might not be good sportpersons but they are very sporty people. Our cover story focussed on Nepali football and the Young Ideas discussion had the whole U-16 team participating. If that isn't promoting Nepali football, we don't know what is.

I like WAVE very much. You guys are doing a good job. So carry on!

Sobin,
Pokhara

Am a regular reader and am proud of WAVE. It's improving with each issue. I'd also like to wish Anil Singh a fast recovery, get well soon! Congratulations all the winners of the 8th Annual Tuborg Image Awards.

Anisha Kapri,
Lazimpat

WAVE gives me my regular dose of information. I'd like to suggest that WAVE should accommodate economic and political issues.

Binod Paudel,
Ilam

I've been reading WAVE ever since I can remember. This is the first time I'm writing to you. Finally, after a couple of good and bad years in Cyprus, I got to read WAVE as my mother sent me one and was delighted to read 'Island Dreams', an article on Cyprus. Just a comment on the same article: Cyprus didn't gain sovereignty on 1 May 2004, it was the EU succession. And the living expenses of 100 Cyprus pounds per year is barely enough for a month. Wishing you well in coming days.

Aviral Koirala

We've been reading and collecting WAVE for more than five years and will continue to do so. However many reader-friendly segments such as Birthday Messages, WAVE Konica Minolta Click of the Month in which we could participate in aren't there anymore.

Abhilash, Iraj and Don,
Ghorahi, Dang

Dear Abhilash, Iraj and Don: Due to popular demand, we are restarting the Birthday Messages. Besides that we have Date with stars!, Look of the Month, Crossword, Cine Quiz, and even Letter of the Month Contests that you can participate in.

The June songbook was superb. Please don't put so much advertisement, rather more preview on Nepali music industry and culture. Can you publish Dibya Subba's poster or of Karma Band's.

Arati Khadka,
Lazimpat

Reading Malvika's articles are very inspiring. Can you include contests for readers outside the Valley. Also, please publish lyrics of new Nepali songs and publish DA 69's poster.

Tripti Dhungana

In the Date With Stars!07 segment, when Nepsydaz came, I was so happy. It was an important event of my life because I'm a great Nepsydaz fan. I participated in the segment but didn't win. Please publish a poster of Nepsydaz with Yanzee and also the lyrics of Maya O Maya (English version).

Chapen Baral,
Chakrapath, Ganeshbasti

The Andolan journal in June issue caught me and 'Pass the Ball' was superb. Football in Nepal has really come a long way. Thank you for the World Cup schedule and the information on the WC teams. I'm cheering for Brazil, what about you guys?

Sag'r Thapa (kal)

Hey Sag'r: Glad you liked the last issue. We are cheering for Brazil, Argentina, England and Italy. May the best team win!

I love WAVE and the magazine has won the hearts of all teenagers, I'm really proud of it. I hope you will keep improving. But I'm sad because I'm in Singapore and can't find WAVE. Can you help? I miss WAVE.

Chandra Magar,
Singapore

Dear Chandra: It's readers like you who keep us going. You can subscribe to WAVE and receive the magazine's hard copy every month or just log online and read the magazine at www.wavemag.com.np.

Thank you for the information you give us on music and other things. I'm a regular reader and WAVE this month was very interesting.

Aditi,
BTM

For two years I've been reading WAVE and would like to thank the team for such a beautiful magazine. Can you put a male model on the cover?

Abhinay Jayaswal

Your website is very nice as was June's issue. Please don't drop Oasis from the magazine and include 1974 AD in the songbook and poster too.

Akisha Shakya,
Pokhara

I haven't missed any of WAVE's issue. All the articles are interesting. However, can you create a space for IT articles in every issue?

Gyanu

Dear Gyanu: We do have space for articles on IT in every issue, the section is called Online or This is IT depending on the subject. Readers are welcome to write in too.

I'm amazed that young Nepalis are rejoicing at the arrival of loktantra. How can it be loktantra when the same people who were ruling in prajatantra are again in power? The change is superficial, do we really have power? We don't even have unity. People on the streets don't know what they are asking for, part say loktantra, part ganatantra. The rest are there to vandalise for fun. Is that what a democratic state means? Beating up policemen who are given one meal a day or sent on 12-hour duties with a packet of biscuits at noon? Why was there so much violence? I was amazed by the number of people who joined the violence as an act of 'regression'. What do you mean by bravery? Cursing policemen and running like chickens when they turn around? Accidentally getting shot? Were those who died ready to die for the nation? If this was really loktantra, we wouldn't have reinstated a corrupt government of the past. I support nobody: not the king, not the parties or the Maoists. None are suited to run the country. We must walk towards peace, not through violent demonstrations, but together peacefully first.

Pushkar dai, don't be afraid of lions, elephants or leopards. They won't eat you. Be careful in Botswana, it's a black area. Don't talk to stranger.

Jasmine

WAVE magazine doesn't reach our market. Please send it here.

Anup Karki,
The Rising Star, Charikot

Dear Anup: Thanks for informing us. We will make sure it gets to Charikot.

I've been reading WAVE since I got hooked on it a long time ago. Though there have been changes, it has never failed to win readers' appreciation for the work you do to make it better. Would you consider publishing poems sent by readers? I hope to see a page dedicated to readers. Bottomline is: WAVE is THE best, it STILL is and WILL always be.

Imorgen

Dear Imorgen: We do have a Readers Write section where we publish articles sent in by readers. We hope to add pages and create space for poetry sent in too.

Thank you for publishing the World Cup 2006's tie-sheet. Please publish Ronaldinho's poster.

Anil Magar

June's issue was great with all the details about World Cup. But in the team info, Luis Figo is not from Juventus, he is from Inter Milan.
Pranaya Lohani

April's songbook was great. We are big fans of Naren of Aastha. Can you give us his email address or contact number?
Alok and Kiran,
Butwal

Correction

The Last paragraph of June issue's Jana Andolan Jouranl' should have read "two months before i was born". Also, in 'what's Up' section's Dhiraj REleases Om Bikram,' the director of the docuumentary should have been Dhiraj Rai, The errors are regreted.
