Value of identity

Culture creates our identity. Preserving it is directly proportional to boosting our tourism industry. Thousands flock to Nepal to see and feel the dynamic and unique Nepali cultural history represented through architecture, festivals, dances and more.

Our country's economy is based on agriculture but this has changed with time. Agriculture alone cannot sustain Nepal's economic needs. We need a secondary source, which is where tourism comes in.

Tourism has flourished, especially since certain areas of Nepal including the Kathmandu Valley were inscribed into the list of World Heritage Sites in 1979. But how long will tourism survive if the rapid rate of destruction of our natural and cultural heritage continues?

Gone are the beautiful 'patis', our 'dhunge dharas' are dry. Beautiful houses are demolished to be replaced with huge, awkward concrete structures that stick out like sore thumbs. These alien structures have brought disharmony. In the long run, they will deter incoming tourists as the very things they come to see are destroyed. The world wants a glimpse of our way of living, the simplicity that thrives here. We can't imitate western ways at the cost of our own values.
