The best things in life are for free but that's really hard to understand when you need to pay the bills. And if the best things are for free, does that mean we have to pay for the good and better things?

Last month for me was crazy as I had to sit down to do some serious soul searching about things in life. First I had trouble with a friend and then everything around me just seemed to collapse at the same time. Relationships between family and friends are our support systems but we take these relationships for granted. We expect the people we love to never leave us, to be with us always and that is why perhaps we never work at strengthening relationships. I've heard that relationships are about understanding, compromising and adjusting. But we rarely work at it when it comes to keeping friendships and family ties.

I made a huge mistake by taking my best friend for granted and lost her. At this point, I wish I could turn back time and make things right. We were friends for free but losing the friendship has cost me. Good friends like her aren't easy to come by.

Love is a four-letter word and it comes for free. It is the foundation on which our lives are based: mother's love, family's love, friend's love, lover's love, pet's love. No price tags attached, no terms and conditions. But we are so caught up in our own lives, trying to keep up in the fast-paced world that we have no time for those who really mean the most to us. Yes, it will cost you money to keep your relationships: to buy surprise gifts, to cook, to call, to sms. But that amount is nothing compared to the priceless feeling of knowing you have a friend who cares and who cares about you. The best things in life do come for free.
