Partying to prove

These ingenious aspiring engineers of Pulchok Campus had engineered a way to have fun while raising money to have more fun. They organised a party at Station Pub, Thamel, called 'Mundane Extrication'. The young students of engineering and architecture were really had a blast, dancing the weekend away on 20 August. "People think we are bookworms and do nothing for fun. Well, here we are to prove you wrong. We love hanging out with friends and partying," said Pramod Maharjan. The fund raised will go towards their one-month IOE Educational Tour 2005.

Giving hope

Students of National Integrated College (NIC) have given Sumitra Lama, 18, new hope for life. She was studying in class XII at NIC when she was diagnosed with blood cancer. She is now being treated for Acute Myeloid Leukemia, M2 Type at Nepal Cancer Hospital.

Sumitra doesn't know what disease she has. She now undergoes chemotherapy and requires injections daily that cost Rs 8,000 each. Doctors at the hospital had said it would cost Rs 8,00,000 to cure her but for a family which lives on a meagre Rs 10,000 a month, it is a staggering amount.

Sumitra comes from a lower middle class family in Kabhre. She and her mother together worked to look after the family. Though her father and brother are physically fit, they do not contribute to the family's income. So her friends at college decided to collect a fund and help with her treatment. They even managed to persuade students at Whitefield, New Summit, Prime and Saraswati Kunja to support their efforts. Now, if only more students helped others instead of burning tyres, perhaps this country could get on the right track.
