There is a demand for civil engineers in Nepal but are you really cut for it?

Civil engineers play a vital role in constructing facilities that directly affect our national prosperity and the overall quality of life. They are related to the planning, designing and managing of the construction and operation of public and private facilities, including highways and transportation systems, power plants, buildings, dams, and water and wastewater treatment facilities.

Various aspects of engineering are incorporated in Civil Engineering. There are a number of types of Civil Engineers such as: Construction Management Engineer, Geotechnical Engineer, Public Works Engineer, Research Engineer, Structural Engineer, Transportation Engineer, and Water Resources Engineer

REQUIREMENTS

Nepal Engineering Institute:
Masters: A Bachelor's Degree and an entrance exam. Selections are made on the basis of merit, based on their course and the entrance examinations.
Bachelors: 50% in I.Sc, 10+2 or equivalent.
Hostel facilities available, for both boys and girls.

Nepal Engineering College:
Bachelors: A minimum of 45% in I.Sc, 10+2 or equivalent.
Hostel facilities available, for both boys and girls.

Acme Engineering College:
Bachelors: A minimum of 45% in I.Sc, 10+2 or equivalent.
Hostel facilities available, for boys only.

Khopa Engineering College:
Bachelors: A minimum of 45% in I.Sc, 10+2 or equivalent.
No hostel facility available.

Kathmandu Institute Of Technology:
Diploma Course (3 years): A minimum of 50% for boys in S.L.C and a minimum of 45% for girls in S.L.C.
Hostel facilities available, for both boys and girls.

Kantipur Engineering College:
Bachelors: A minimum of 50% in I.Sc, 10+2 or equivalent.
Hostel facilities available, for boys only.

FEE STRUCTURE:

Nepal Engineering Institute:
Masters: Rs. 1,27,460 for the 2-year course
Bachelors- 4-year course
Nepali Full Fee Paying Students: Rs. 2,45,720
Foreign Full Fee Student: Rs. 3,60,120
5% scholarships available, based on merit.

Nepal Engineering College:
Total of Rs. 3,43,000 for the 4-year course.
5% scholarships available, based on merit.

Acme Engineering College:
Total of Rs. 1,90,000 for the 4-year course.
5% scholarships available, based on merit.

Khopa Engineering College:
Total of Rs. 1,95,000 for the 4-year course.
5% scholarships available, based on merit.

Kathmandu Institute Of Technology:
Total Of Rs. 1,30,000 for the 3-year Diploma course.
15% scholarships available, based on merit.

Kantipur Engineering College:
Total of Rs. 2,86,000 for the 4-year course.
10% scholarships available, based on merit.

SCOPE:

There always has been a demand for qualified civil engineers in Nepal. The current situation, however, has led to a slump. The faculty members of the different colleges we visited as well as working professionals foresee resurgence in the near future.

As a CE, you generally would work in one of the following areas:

1. In Private Practice: You will have to plan, design, construct and operate physical works and facilities used by the public.

2. In Academia: You will teach students the fundamentals of civil engineering. You could also be involved in research in order to advance the state-of-the-art.

3. In Public Practice: You could be involved in city and/or regional planning, layout and construction of highways and pipelines.

4. In Combination with other Disciplines: A Civil Engineering degree combined with an other degree such as: Engineering Geologist, Engineering Economist, or Engineer/Attorney
